New York Auto Show: 2010 Mazda CX-9 & CX-7 Facelifts

Highlighting the list of changes planned for the 2010 Mazda CX-9 is a new front-end, which picks up the company’s smiling fascia, as well as new headlights and fog-lamps. Like the recently updated CX-7, the new CX-9’s interior will receive higher quality materials, a new design for the gauges, and a new multifunction information display.

On-sale date and pricing will likely be announced at the show; expect the MAZDASPEED3 to join the four- and five-door 2010 Mazda3s in the lineup later this year.


Mazda has been very busy in the past couple of months, with updated versions of the MX-5 and CX-7, as well as the all-new 2010 Mazda3, all making their respective debuts recently. Mazda’s new model roll-out shows no sign of slowing as the company is planning to unveil an updated version of its CX-9 SUV at next month’s New York Auto Show.

The outgoing Mazdaspeed3 had a lot going for it. The combination of a turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four, six-speed manual, LSD and a practical hatch solidified its place in our hearts when it spent a week in the Autoblog Garage. While the aforementioned good stuff carries over to the redesigned 2010 model, any amount of stealth has been gobbled up by the new MPS' gaping maw.

Retroforza gives Mazda Miata a Ferrari complex

If you've got an obsession with boomer culture, but don't have the budget to spring for a period-specific Ferrari, never fear, RetroForza makes it possible to be a nostalgic poseur. Sporting lines reminiscent of Ferrari's 275, RetroForza is claiming that its Italia bodywork kit for the Mazda MX-5 takes inspiration from vintage Lotus, Alfa, Jaguar and Cobra models.

While It's not horrible, the proportions don't exactly work. There's too much front overhang, leading to a fierce underbite, but it avoids looking as stubby as it might on the MX-5's short wheelbase. The Mazda mechanicals mean that it'll be reliable and fun to drive, and with a coupe version supposedly available, there are worse ways to rebody your Miata.

2009 models lead NHTSA's latest recalls, including Mazda6, Town & Country, Ranger

Mazda will call back some 29,000 examples of its slippery new Mazda6 sedan for a potential door handle fault that could cause them to open without warning. According to Automotive News, the outside handle can cause the door to open as a result of an "inconsistent dimension combination" between the bracket and the handle (read: they don't line up properly).

The fix will involve replacing any/all door handles and/or brackets if they are found to be defective.

Geneva Motor Show; 2010 Mazda3 Mazdaspeed (MPS) headed

Mazda used last year’s Los Angeles Auto Show to debut the new 2010 Mazda3 Sedan, and then followed it with the reveal of the Hatchback model at the Bologna Motor Show just one month later. There is still one more variant of the Mazda3 in the works and it is set to make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.


The car is the sporty Mazdaspeed (MPS) model and it has now been revealed ahead of its Geneva debut. Details about the upcoming hot-hatch are yet to be released, although we can confirm that it will come with the same MZR 2.3L turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine as the current model. Output is expected to be up around the 268hp (200kW) mark.


Differentiating the Mazdaspeed from the regular Mazda3 lineup is a large hood scoop for the turbo, oversized air-intakes in the front bumper, a rear diffuser, large-diameter twin-exhaust pipes, and a chunky rear wing.


While other specs for the car are hard to come by, there are rumors that the newly developed RevoKnuckle FWD suspension system from the Ford Focus RS could be used in the Mazda. An AWD set-up has been ruled out.


Mazda will also use next month’s Geneva event to unveil Mazda3 with i-stop, Mazda’s fuel-saving engine stop-start technology.
